Efes Hotel was and is still one of the most symbolic structures in Izmir. Due to a fire in 2003 the symbolic landmark was rendered unusable. Two years after the fire a decision to continue as Swissotel Grand Efes with a newly conceived layout was made. Since the Spa and Fitness Center was due for an upgrade to accommodate the changing times, it was requested to break down the area with an indoor swimming pool and conceive a new layout to encompass a Spa, Wellness, and Fitness complex. The exterior was renovated without deteriorating the integrity and soul of the building. A large indoor swimming pool and dressing areas were designed on the entrance floor. On the same floor one could also find state of the art restrooms, steam-rooms, saunas, solariums, massage rooms, and a vitamin bar.  The upper floor held therapy rooms and specially designed resting rooms. The fitness complex is on the second floor where a "spa bridge"provides hotel guests with access to the spa center and outdoor pool without having to exit the building. nIn the restructuring of the entire hotel and spa center, the works of artists such as Jale Yılmabaşar and Bedri Rahmi, formerly located in the hotel, are displayed.
